Beyond Ballet: 5 Benefits of Joining a Holiday Dance Workshop for Kids

School holidays are the perfect opportunity for children to try something new, stay active and discover different ways to express themselves through movement.
This December, The Ballet Academy is bringing a little 90s nostalgia and plenty of dance energy to our December Holiday Dance Workshops, happening from 15–18 December 2026 at SAFRA Toa Payoh!
With two exciting genres to explore – K-pop dance and acrobatics – children aged 7 and above can look forward to four days of movement, new challenges and lots of fun.
But beyond learning a new choreography or attempting an exciting acrobatic skill, what can children actually gain from these experiences?
Whether your child already attends ballet classes or is completely new to these dance styles, here are five reasons why exploring different forms of dance can be a valuable part of their learning journey.
1. Develop Better Body Awareness, Coordination and Control

Different dance styles challenge the body in different ways:
K-pop dance incorporates body isolations, sharp movements, dynamic transitions and coordinated choreography. Children learn to control different parts of their bodies while moving in time with the music.
Acrobatics, on the other hand, introduces movements that require strength, flexibility, balance and spatial awareness. Learning skills such as cartwheels and aerials encourages children to understand body alignment, weight transfer and coordination.
Whether it's learning to coordinate their arms and legs in a K-pop routine, keeping their balance during a turn or trying a new acrobatic movement, every activity challenges them in a different way. With practice, children gradually become more confident, coordinated and comfortable with their movements.
2. Improve Musicality, Rhythm and Performance Skills

Musicality is an important part of dance education. It involves more than simply following the beat; dancers must learn to recognise rhythms, respond to musical accents and interpret changes in tempo and mood.
K-pop is particularly useful for exploring musicality through its distinctive beats, rhythmic patterns and energetic choreography.
Children learn to:
Identify musical accents and changes in rhythm.
Coordinate movements with different beats and counts.
Remember choreography and movement sequences.
Express the mood and character of a song.
Develop stage presence and performance confidence.
Unlike traditional ballet exercises, K-pop choreography often incorporates sharper movements, playful expressions and dynamic performance elements. These experiences encourage children to become more expressive performers and discover different ways of interpreting music through movement.
3. Build Strength, Flexibility and Physical Confidence

Acrobatic training provides additional opportunities to work on strength, flexibility, balance and body control.
When learning cartwheels and aerials, children gradually develop the physical foundations needed for more challenging movements. They practise supporting their own body weight, coordinating their limbs and understanding how to move safely through different positions.
With appropriate progressions and teacher guidance, acro training can help develop:
Upper-body and core strength.
Flexibility and mobility.
Balance and spatial awareness.
Coordination and body control.
Confidence in attempting new physical challenges.
Of course, not every child will achieve a complete cartwheel or aerial within four days, and that's perfectly fine! The focus is on understanding the technique, developing the necessary strength and working towards each skill at an appropriate pace.
It is important to remember that advanced acrobatic skills take time to develop. A short workshop introduces students to the fundamentals and gives them an opportunity to explore new movements at an appropriate level.
4. Encourage Confidence, Creativity and Teamwork

Learning something unfamiliar can be both exciting and challenging. Children may initially feel unsure when attempting a new dance combination or learning an acrobatic skill they have never tried before.
However, through demonstration, practice and encouragement, they gradually learn to overcome these challenges.
K-pop choreography often involves learning routines as a group, which encourages children to observe one another, stay coordinated and work towards a shared performance.
Acrobatic training encourages individual perseverance, as students work towards achieving specific movements at their own pace.
Both experiences can help children develop:
Greater confidence in trying new things.
Patience and perseverance when learning difficult skills.
Creativity and self-expression.
Communication and teamwork.
A positive attitude towards learning from mistakes.
These qualities extend beyond the dance studio and can support children's development in other aspects of their lives.
5. Explore Different Dance Styles and Become a More Versatile Dancer

Ballet provides an important foundation in classical technique, posture, discipline and movement control. However, dance is a diverse art form, and exposure to different styles can broaden a dancer's understanding of movement.
K-pop, jazz, contemporary dance and acrobatics each offer different movement experiences and physical challenges.
For ballet students, exploring other genres can introduce new approaches to rhythm, coordination, strength and performance. For children who are new to dance, workshops provide a welcoming opportunity to discover their interests and experience different ways of moving.
The aim is not to replace regular ballet or technique training, but to complement it through a wider exposure to dance.
By exploring different styles, children can develop a more versatile approach to movement while discovering the styles they enjoy most.
Why Join a Holiday Dance Workshop?
Unlike regular weekly classes, a holiday dance workshop gives children the chance to focus on something different over several consecutive days.
Instead of learning a little each week, they get to revisit the same movements, practise choreography and become more familiar with new skills throughout the four-day programme.
It's also a wonderful opportunity to:
Try a new dance genre in a short, focused programme.
Stay active during the school holidays.
Meet new friends and learn together.
Take on new challenges outside their usual routines.
Discover new interests and build confidence.
Most importantly, it gives children something exciting to look forward to during their school break!
At The Ballet Academy: More Than Just Ballet
At The Ballet Academy, we believe in the importance of a strong dance foundation while encouraging our students to explore the wider world of dance.
As a school offering Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet training and Silver Swans classes, we value classical technique, musicality and artistic development.
At the same time, we believe that dance education should go beyond learning syllabus exercises and examination work.
Through our workshops, recital productions and other dance activities, our students have opportunities to experience different styles, including K-pop, contemporary dance, Broadway-inspired choreography and acrobatics.
We want our students to enjoy dancing, discover their individual strengths and become confident in exploring different forms of movement.
After all, there is so much more to dance than just one style!
