How To Prepare For Your Ballet Exam

1) Leading Up To The Exam

KNOW THE SYLLABUS

Take each class seriously and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! You should know the syllabus well so that you can dance it confidently.

2) The Day Before

STAY CALM AND RELAX

Engage in activities that will help you relax. Do the things that you enjoy and this will put you in the right frame of mind to do your best in the exam.

THINK POSITIVELY

Your mind is a powerful tool to help you achieve your goals. Set your mind for success and believe that you can do it. Most importantly, have faith in yourself.

3) Just Before The Exam

BE PUNCTUAL

You will definitely feel the nerves so being punctual will give you sufficient time to prepare. In case something unexpected happens, you will also have time to rectify it. It is already a stressful time so don’t give yourself unnecessary stress!

DRESS CODE

First impression counts so ensure your appearance is impeccable. Your hair should be in a neat bun and all hair neatly gelled back. Your attire should be well-fitted, neat and clean, tights free of holes and immaculate ballet shoes. Do not wear any jewellery, make up or nail polish.

WARM UP BEFORE THE EXAM

This step is extremely important! You should ensure that you are warmed up. Do spend at least 20 minutes to warm up and stretch before you head in for your exam. This will prevent injuries and also prepare your body well.

4) During The Exam

FIRST IMPRESSION COUNTS

The moment you walk through the door, you are being examined. Greet and thank the examiner respectfully. When waiting for your turn, do not talk. You should stand at the side quietly.

EXPRESS YOURSELF FULLY

Do not be afraid and shy to express yourself fully in your performance.

BE CONFIDENT

Do not stare at the examiner, but project your eyeline. If you make a mistake, just move on and not dwell on it. Remember, one mistake does not determine the outcome of your exam.

HAVE FUN, SMILE AND ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE

No matter how nervous you are, have fun and try to do your best. Feel the music, feel your movements and show the examiners that you deserve to do well. Good vibes are really important, and when you love what you do, others can feel it too.

5) After The Exam

BE POLITE AND SAY THANK YOU AT THE END

Remember to thank the examiner at the end of the exam. As a dancer, it is important to be polite. Always thank the teachers, examiners and pianist. This shows your respect towards them.

All the best!
